I wasn't really planning on a blog post today but I came across an article online that was discussing the drought for American men and women in winning the Boston Marathon. As I looked over the list, I noticed that there was not ONE female Kenyan winner before Catherine Ndereba's win in 2000. Since then, there have been three others besides Catherine's four wins: Margaret Okayo, Rita Jeptoo and Salina Kosgei. There were plenty of Kenyan MEN winning, going back to Ibrahim Hussein in 1988 but no Kenyan women. To me this just emphasises even more the role Catherine has played in influencing women in Kenya!
You can view the list of previous winners here
My journey to tell the story of how World Champion Kenyan marathon runner Catherine Ndereba has inspired many through her running and how her faith has guided her. This story will explore the many ways she stands as a role model for Kenyan women and girls and how she inspires others to pursue their education and dreams and not be bound by the traditional role women have been bound to in Kenya. Check back often as I'm sure the scope of this will change and evolve through time.

Hey when's Catherine next race? Can Catherine make her reture to Chicago this year?
ReplyDeleteEthio boy, I'm not sure when her next race is yet; she is recovering from a torn muscle but it is coming along. I can't answer about Chicago because I really don't know. Catherine and her manager decide which races to attend and there are a lot of factors that go into it but I will update as soon as I know! Thanks for reading!
